Mental health practitioners in secondary and specialist schools

The department introduced the Mental Health Practitioners initiative in 2019 to expand in-school mental health and wellbeing supports to Victorian government schools. From Term 4 2021, the initiative has been rolled out to all eligible school campuses across Victoria. It has also been extended to all eligible specialist school campuses.

Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS)

Every eligible government and low fee non-government primary school is funded to employ a Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader to implement a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing.

A tiered approach to mental health and wellbeing support

Tier 1: School-wide mental health and wellbeing promotion

Universal interventions to help create a positive, inclusive, and supportive school climate.

Tier 2: Early intervention and cohort specific mental health support for students

School mental health support for students with specific needs or vulnerabilities.

Tier 3: Targeted and crisis mental health response in schools

Support for individual students with complex mental health needs or in crisis.
