Ready to Volunteer - Anita’s story

View transcript

For anyone who is not sure if they are ready to volunteer or don’t think they have enough time, there are so many different things you can do to volunteer – even if it’s only half an hour a week,” said mum-of-two, Anita.

Anita first got involved in volunteering to support her kids’ sporting dreams. Four years on, the Ferntree Gully graphic designer enjoys volunteering at her children’s sports clubs, saying it is a great opportunity to connect with kids and parents in her community.

Anita uses her skills as a graphic designer to support the local junior footy club where her 12-year-old daughter plays. She lends a hand to create artwork and design the club’s posters and newsletters.

Anita also volunteers as manager of the Monbulk Rangers, the local under 11s soccer team that her son plays for. It’s a role that sees her organisational skills shine as she coordinates players and parents while being the key contact point for the team and club.

As well as getting to know the community and meeting new friends, Anita’s experience as a volunteer has helped her build skills and confidence in managing people and delegating tasks, something she now applies in her day-to-day work.

While Anita’s life is busy running a small business, juggling family life and her volunteer roles, she really enjoys the positive benefits and connections volunteering brings and encourages others to put their hand up to volunteer if they can.

I volunteer because I think it’s a great way to be a part of my kids’ lives, be a part of what they enjoy doing and the community that goes along with it.”
