What inspired you to apply?

I have always been looking for spaces for Women of Colour to connect and encourage each other to develop. I have advocated for the representation and appreciation of the unique insights, lived experiences and skills of Women of Colour.

Sometimes it has been difficult to encourage high-achieving Women of Colour to find ways to dismantle preconceptions and unconscious bias in the workplace as I didn’t have the right tools to support others.

This course provided precisely what I was looking for – the opportunity for Women of Colour to reflect on their personal and professional histories, and learn to be bolder about their ambitions and achieving them. It also creates a supportive network who understand and inspire each other to overcome challenges in the future.

What has been the biggest take away message for you?

Learning about adaptive challenges and breaking apart preconceptions and bias has been one of the most important leadership skills I’ve taken away. This has helped me reflect more deeply on my own behaviour and communications and has helped me in understanding how I relate and connect with others.

Personally, the biggest takeaway is to give myself the permission and voice to advocate for things that I value in the workplace and in the community, with grace and candour. Sometimes we are so deep in our own head or the institutional and systemic structures that we forget we have a voice and only need our own permission to use it.

How has this program helped you pursue your career goals and aspirations?

The program has helped me connect with other like-minded participants who I can bounce ideas with honestly and with trust.

I applied for my current role during this program and it supported me in adapting to a new environment after a promotion. It also broadened my views on how I can plan the next steps in my career.

As someone in the international relations space, the program has also repeatedly reminded me that as Women / People of Colour, we are the global majority. Lifting our capability in Australia to empower People of Colour can lift our international profile and intercultural knowledge across various global engagements.
