Road safety camera types

Victoria’s road safety camera system consists of both fixed and mobile cameras placed at carefully chosen locations. Victoria’s road safety camera system consists of both fixed and mobile cameras placed at carefully chosen locations.

The types of camera are:

Speed cameras

Both fixed location and mobile speed cameras are used in Victoria to keep roads safer.

Red light cameras

Red light cameras are placed at traffic intersections. All cameras detect red light offences and some also detect speed offences.

Mobile digital road safety cameras

Mobile digital road safety cameras are installed in unmarked vehicles. Although mobile digital road safety cameras are not sign-posted, they are not deliberately hidden.

Point-to-point road safety cameras

Point-to-point road safety cameras calculate the average speed of a vehicle by determining the time taken to travel between 2 points.

40 km/h zone cameras

The 40 km/h zones are located in places with a high concentration of pedestrians (near schools and shopping strips) and also where road work is being undertaken.

Distracted driver and seatbelt detection cameras

These cameras detect and take photos of drivers who are using a portable device or not wearing their seatbelt correctly.

Trialling new road safety camera technology
