Promoting gender balance in male-dominated sectors
Women have historically been underrepresented in many traditional male industries. This is due to longstanding structural barriers in the workplace, such as:
- gender discrimination
- sexism and sexual harassment
- entrenched stereotypes about the careers men and women can have
- inflexible working arrangements
- lack of access to paid parental leave.
These barriers can maintain harmful gender norms that negatively impact all genders. But they mainly affect women’s economic security.
Many organisations are changing their practices. They’re leading with inclusivity and innovation to ensure all their employees thrive. And there are more women leaders in male-dominated industries such as manufacturing and energy.
With our financial support, the National Association of Women in Operations (NAWO) have developed a series of case studies. The case studies showcase how the operations sector can attract, retain and progress women’s leadership aspirations.

Funding
We are working to get more women into safe and meaningful jobs in the following industries:
- construction
- transport
- energy
- manufacturing.
We are providing $3 million for strategies that support women to work in manufacturing and energy industries. This is in response to the Inquiry into Economic Equity for Victorian Women.
