For school students
Overview
All students in Victoria from Prep to Year 10 are welcome to participate in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. To participate, Register and log in to the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.
Including everyone in the Challenge
You can modify how a student completes the Challenge. Follow the steps below. For more information, visit Include all students in the Challenge.
Completing the Challenge
Once a student is signed up, they are ready to take part in the Challenge.
To complete the Challenge, a student, or their supporter in the Challenge will:
1. Access the Challenge book list
The Challenge book list has lots of books to choose from. Most of the books that students read during the Challenge should be taken from the list. It is important that students:
- read books appropriate for their year or reading level
- check with their teacher or parent/carer if they want to read a book from the list for years 9 and 10 students, if they are not in those year levels (this list includes titles for mature readers).
Students can also count books read for the MS Readathon in the Challenge.
2. Read a certain number of books
During the Challenge, a student will read a certain number of books that are suitable for them. While the number of books can be varied for a student, the general guidance is:
- Prep to Year 2: Read a total of 30 books, with 20 or more of those books from the Challenge book list
- Year 3 to Year 9: Read a total of 15 books, with 10 or more of those books from the Challenge book list
- Year 10: Read a total of 15 books, with 5 or more of those books from the Challenge book list.
3. Track books read
Each student has a dashboard to track the books they read for the Challenge. Once a student has read a book, they should mark it as finished on their reading list.
4. Have books verified
Once a student has completed the Challenge, books need to be verified by a teacher or parent/carer. If the student is a home-based reader, a parent/carer must send an email to readingchallenge@education.vic.gov.au asking them to verify the books. Following the verification, students that have completed the Challenge will receive a Certificate of Completion in Term 4.
For children below school age
Overview
All children below school age in Victoria are welcome to participate in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. To participate, parents/carers or early childhood services need to Register and log in to the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.
Including everyone in the Challenge
You can modify how a child completes the Challenge. You can read to children, or they can read by themselves or with someone else. For example, a parent/carer, brother or sister, buddy or friend can read to the child or help them read. This support is important if the child is just learning to read.
