Bully documentary – teacher resource

Bully is a documentary produced by Lee Hirsch from the United States. The documentary opens a window into the lives of kids who become the target of bullying behaviour.

Many Australian schools are already using the film as a resource in their senior secondary classrooms. To further support this, the Department in conjunction with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image has developed an iBook. The iBook comprises a unit of 10 lessons that encourage students in Years 10 -12 to focus on the problem of bullying, consider its impact on individuals and communities, and explore strategies for preventing and dealing with bullying behaviour.

Growing Up Digital video series

In the series of videos, students from Haileybury discuss their personal views of what it’s like ‘growing up digital’. Each video focuses on a specific topic, including digital dramas, privacy and gender issues. Within the commentary, students discuss both the positives and the negatives of growing up digital and provide advice to support their peers to use the space safely and responsibly.

Covering cybersafety, cyberbullying and bullying, these advice sheets are a valuable resource for students, parents, teacher and the wider community.

Radio advertisements

In 2013, two Victorian school students won $10,000 for their schools in the Bully Stoppers broadcast competition.

The competition formed part of the Bully Stoppers campaign. Entrants were asked to create a 30-second radio ad that appealed to young people and motivated others to help stamp out bullying in Victorian schools.

Lily, who took out the primary school category, provided a creative twist on the well-known schoolyard clapping game ‘Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake baker man’. To hear Lily’s ad, see: Advertisement One(opens in a new window).

The winner of the high school category, Shivani, discussed bullying from both the victim’s and bystander’s point of views. To hear Shivani’s ad, see: Advertisement Two(opens in a new window).

Both winning ads were professionally produced at Austereo’s studio and ran throughout June 2013 on Fox FM.
