Case study: Mahad - Employment Brokers program

Discover how the Employment Brokers program supported Mahad to gain industry experience and access pathways to meaningful employment opportunities. Mahad’s* journey with the Employment Brokers program began in August 2023, after a period of long-term unemployment following completing university in 2022.

Despite his academic achievements, Mahad struggled to gain industry experience and lacked professional connections, making it challenging to secure meaningful employment.

The employment broker helped Mahad identify key barriers, including low work experience and limited exposure to industry networks.

To address this, he volunteered at Himilo(opens in a new window) and helped run a sports program over eight weeks.

This practical experience allowed him to develop essential skills in planning, communication and teamwork, while also gaining insight into organisational processes and community development.

Through ongoing support, including resume building and career planning, Mahad explored career opportunities related to his interests.

In December 2023, he was employed by Himilo and his participation in an industry event sparked his interest in the civil construction sector.

In January 2024, he applied for and secured a job within a major infrastructure construction company, where he continues to thrive, benefiting from both on-the-job experience and certified training.

This success story highlights the power of tailored support in overcoming barriers and creating meaningful career pathways for individuals.
