What is TAFE?
Learn about what TAFE is and how it might be a great choice for your career. TAFE has a rich history in Victoria, having played a crucial role in training since the late 19th century. The name TAFE, which stands for Technical and Further Education, became commonly used in the 1970s.
Modern-day TAFE offers a wide range of qualifications, from nationally accredited certificates and advanced diplomas to pre-apprenticeships and short courses. Students can choose from a diverse range of study areas, from health, design and creative industries, to cyber security, business and engineering.
There are 12 TAFE institutes, 4 dual sector universities and a large number of private training organisations that deliver government-funded VET courses across Victoria.
Why choose TAFE?
- TAFE courses incorporate theoretical learning and practical skills, designed to ensure that graduates are job-ready upon course completion.
- TAFE is accessible – there are more than 90 campuses across Victoria collectively offering hundreds of courses, and the cost of a TAFE qualification is comparatively low to other options.
- TAFE offers modern facilities and a supportive environment.
- Employment outcomes for TAFE graduates are strong.
- You can study a short course, certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or foundation skills courses – with options for all levels and backgrounds.
Who is it for?
TAFE is ideal for:
- school leavers entering the workforce
- career changers
- people looking to retrain or upskill
- people wanting to learn a a trade or profession
