VSA summer symposium explores self-determination, Treaty and Koorie prosperity
The summer symposium series kicks off for 2026 Published: Monday 16 March 2026 at 9:21 am

The Victorian Skills Authority (VSA), in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI), hosted the second event in its 2026 summer symposium series: shared prosperity through skills.
The session, Self-determination, Treaty and Koorie prosperity, brought together leaders from across Koorie communities and the training and skills sector to explore how a culturally safe and inclusive skills system can better support Koorie learners, workers and communities.
Drawing on VAEAI’s deep expertise, the symposium provided up to date commentary on the progress of Treaty in Victoria and the broader movement toward greater self-determination for Koorie peoples.
Presenters shared evidence, lived experience and perspectives on what meaningful self-determination and Treaty could mean for the future of skills, training and employment.
Participants examined several core themes shaping the future of the Victorian skills system:
- self-determination and Treaty, and what they can mean for skills and employment
- good practice and opportunities to learn from examples
- promoting cultural competence and safety across Victorian TAFEs and industry
- fostering open dialogue and knowledge sharing across Koorie groups and wider industry.
These discussions highlighted the importance of long-term partnership, community led design and culturally safe systems that enable Koorie learners to thrive.
The symposium featured respected members of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, community organisations and leaders with extensive experience in education, governance and advocacy.
Their leadership and insights provided valuable guidance on the systemic changes needed to strengthen cultural safety, improve access and build a more responsive and respectful skills system for Koorie peoples.
The VSA extends its thanks to all presenters and participants for their contributions, collaboration and leadership. Their expertise is helping shape a more culturally aware, inclusive and prosperous future for Koorie communities and the wider Victorian workforce.
