Our Vision
A great education for every child and young person – so they can thrive now, and in the future, for a fairer, smarter, and more prosperous state.
Our vision is aligned to the principles of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006(opens in a new window) which states that:
All Victorians, irrespective of the education and training institution they attend, where they live or their social or economic status, should have access to a high quality education that:
- realises their learning potential and maximises their education and training achievement
- promotes enthusiasm for lifelong learning
- allows parents to take an active part in their child’s education and training
What we do
We lead the delivery of education and development services to children, and young people both:
- directly through government schools
- indirectly through the regulation and funding of early childhood services, and non-government schools.
We implement Victorian government policy for early childhood and school education. We manage Victorian government schools and drive improvement in primary and secondary school education.
We work collaboratively with a diverse range of public, private and not-for-profit providers serving Victorian children and young people.
Our values and guiding principles
As public sector employees, we uphold the Victorian public sector values:
- integrity
- responsiveness
- impartiality
- accountability
- respect
- leadership
- human rights.
The Code of conduct for Victorian public sector employees requires department employees to familiarise themselves and act in accord with these values.
Our guiding principles describe how we approach our work and foster our culture :
- Hearts in, minds on: we bring our passion, knowledge and skills to improve outcomes.
- Our best work matters: we do high-quality work that matters to people’s lives.
- Be curious and work together: we listen, collaborate and value challenge and diversity.
- Seize the day: we are proactive, seek to solve problems and adapt to deliver.
- See the whole picture: we are guided by evidence and seek to understand the broader context.
Our achievements
Our Annual report(opens in a new window) details how we are delivering on our commitment to provide Victorians with the best learning and development experience.
Our strategic direction and planned outcomes
Our Strategic Plan(opens in a new window) describes the department’s direction, planned outcomes, and the strategies we will use to deliver the Victorian Government’s education reforms. The Strategic Plan is refreshed annually.
