A supported pathway to success
How VCE Vocational Major student Emily plans to succeed in the new school year and beyond. Emily from Ringwood Secondary College is ready to tackle her final year of school. She says her chosen VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) pathway has given her space to breathe.
Emily is passionate about dispelling the myth that the VCE VM is the ’easy road to take’. She says she is motivated to achieve great things through the VCE VM.
‘I chose VCE VM because I really wanted to grow myself academically and become job-ready,’ Emily says.
‘Doing the VCE VM pathway, I can see meaning behind all the work I’m doing. That motivates me to work hard and aim high.’

Emily’s dream is to become a primary school teacher or occupational therapist. She is following a Sport and Recreation VET course pathway to achieve her goal.
‘When I saw I could do Sport and Recreation as a VET course I jumped at the opportunity,’ Emily says.
‘The course has offered so much already, like umpiring AFL Auskick, [getting] a First Aid certificate and surfing at Urban Surf.’
Emily’s school week doesn’t look like everyone else’s – but that’s one of the things she loves about the VCE VM.
Emily goes to school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, then she does VET on Wednesdays and structured workplace learning on Friday. Vocational Major students don’t do exams or tests, except for the GAT, they are assessed through their assessments.
Through her weekly structured workplace learning, Emily has already had practical work experience in a primary school, an adult disability program and in an office.
Emily says she has all the support she needs to follow her chosen pathway.
‘My school has been very supportive,’ Emily says. ‘You can tell the teachers are really invested in seeing us succeed.’
