Learn more about working in the industry.

On this page

Agriculture, horticulture and agribusiness are all major employers in Victoria. It’s expected that 7,500 new workers will enter the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry by 2027, and that 26,200 will enter by 2034.*

Agriculture is another word for farming. It is the large scale growing and harvesting of crops for food and other products, such as textiles. Farms may also raise livestock for food and animal products.

Horticulture is small-scale crop production. It is usually done in a greenhouse or tunnel. Produce can include fruit, vegetables, nuts, flowers, turf and nursery products.

Agribusiness is a combination of the words ‘agriculture’ and ‘business’. This is the commerce side of farming. It includes elements like finance, technology, transport, global demand and weather impacts. Processing and distribution are also part of agribusiness.

Consumer habits are changing. Technology is evolving. Sustainable agriculture and a cleaner, greener economy are also becoming a focus. The demand for workers with skills that match current and future industry needs is growing.

Many people make their start in this industry with Vocational Education and Training (VET). VET gives you the opportunity for on the job training to get real world experience.
