Secondary Teaching Scholarships: Phase 2 (employment)

Further payments are available if an STS recipient works as a teacher in a Victorian government secondary or specialist school setting after they complete their degree requirements.
Moving from the study phase into the employment phase
This phase starts when an STS recipient gets a job as a classroom teacher in a Victorian government secondary or specialist school. This must happen within 15 months of completing their teaching degree requirements.
- Graduates of eligible undergraduate degrees may receive about $8,400 over their first two years of teaching.
This is about $18,000 in total when combined with the study payments.
- Graduates of eligible postgraduate degrees may receive about $3,300 over their first two years of teaching.
This is about $9,000 in total when combined with the study payments.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the employment component of the STS, an applicant must:
- be a recipient of the study component of the STS.
- have completed the requirements of a secondary or dual qualification Initial Teacher Education (ITE) degree accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
- commence employment as a classroom teacher in a Victorian government secondary or specialist school setting (including periods of higher duties) within 15 months of completing their ITE qualification.
- be fully or provisionally registered with the VIT at the time of employment in a Victorian government secondary or specialist school.

- If you receive a scholarship, you are responsible for meeting all employment requirements.
- You are not obliged to use the scholarship payments to pay for the costs of your study.
- If you do not complete the full employment contract (for example, resign or do not complete the employment requirements), you will not receive further funding.
- The Department of Education is not required to withhold tax (PAYG) from scholarships paid. You may be liable to pay tax on your scholarship. For more information, see the calculator on the Australian Taxation Office website.
- The Department of Education strongly recommends that recipients seek independent tax advice for their scholarship payment.
