About the scholarship
The Victorian Government is offering a scholarship to eligible students who are accepted into the 2026 Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set or the Introduction to Translating and Interpreting Skill Set at RMIT University to study interpreting in one of these languages:

Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set
The Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set is an introductory entry-level course for people wanting to gain foundational skills in interpreting and basic industry knowledge.
There are four units in the course:
- Build glossaries for translating and interpreting assignments (PSPTIS103)
- Prepare to translate and interpret (PSPTIS104)
- Apply codes and standards to ethical practice (PSPTIS102)
- Manage interactions in general settings (PSPTIS114).
Classes will be held online only. They may be held during the day or evening.
Introduction to Translating and Interpreting Skill Set
The Introduction to Translating and Interpreting Skill Set course is an introductory entry-level course for people wanting to gain foundational skills in interpreting and translating, and basic industry knowledge.

Prepare to translate and interpret (PSPTIS104)

Read and analyse special purpose English texts to be translated (PTSPTIS148)

Manage interactions in general settings (PSPTIS114).
Classes will be held online only. They may be held during the day or evening.
Scholarship amount
Up to $2,599 will be awarded as a scholarship to cover the program fees in full for the Introduction to Translating and Interpreting Skill Set.
Up to $2,313 will be awarded as a scholarship to cover the program fees in full for the Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set.
Scholarships will be paid directly to RMIT University on behalf of the student.

- Who is eligible
To be eligible for a scholarship you must:
- live in Victoria
- speak one of the targeted languages
- be an Australian citizen, or have permanent residency (consideration will be given to applications from people seeking asylum)
- be undertaking the RMIT University Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set or Introduction to Translating and Interpreting Skill Set in one of the targeted languages offered for 2026
- remain enrolled and meet attendance requirements for each unit at RMIT University for the duration of the program
- apply for the program online through RMIT and upload required evidence by the closing date of each intake. (Please note: applications may close early once all available scholarships have been fully allocated)
- sit your eligible NAATI test within approximately 12-18 months of course completion or apply for recognised practicing credential whichever is the highest qualification available. This program cannot be deferred.

- NAATI certification
The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) issues credentials or certification to people who wish to work as interpreters and translators in Australia. NAATI sets and maintains high national standards for Australia’s translating and interpreting sector.
Students who successfully complete their course will need to sit their relevant certification test or apply for a recognised practicing credential (whichever is the higher qualification available in their language) with NAATI.
Students who successfully complete Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set will be eligible to sit the:
- Certified Provisional Interpreter test; or
- if the test is not available in their language, students should apply for the Recognised Practicing Interpreter credential. The scholarship will cover the NAATI fee for one of the above tests or credentials.
Students who successfully complete the Introduction to Translating and Interpreting Skill Set will be eligible to sit the:
- Certified Provisional Interpreter test
- Certified Translator test; or
- if the test is not available in their language, students should apply for the Recognised Practicing Interpreter credential or translator credential with NAATI. The scholarship will cover the NAATI fee for one of the above tests or credentials.
Graduates must sit the test or apply for the recognised practising credentials within approximately 12-18 months of completing the program.
NAATI recognition or certification is required to work as a qualified interpreter or translator in Victoria and across Australia. The Victorian Government has partnered with RMIT University and NAATI to help grow the language services workforce.
It is an expectation that students will sit their relevant NAATI test for the highest qualification available to them upon completion of their RMIT course.
