Richmond to Flinders Street corridor
Victoria’s principal hub for sports, entertainment and arts. The Richmond to Flinders Precinct is Victoria’s premier cultural, sports, entertainment and leisure destination, offering a range of experiences enjoyed by locals, and national and international visitors alike.
Situated on either side of the Birrarung (Yarra River), this unique and iconic central Melbourne space incorporates the Arts Precinct, Sports and Entertainment Precinct, Domain Parklands and Royal Botanic Gardens.
With so many events and attractions, the Precinct is a significant contributor to Victoria’s visitor economy. Its public spaces and cultural experiences enrich people’s lives, help them to stay active and healthy, and contribute to their overall wellbeing.
The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is working with key government partners such as the City of Melbourne Council and Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation to support development and economic activity that contributes to boosting the visitor economy. DTP is also identifying opportunities to improve connectivity and enhance the visitor experience to ensure the Precinct remains an exciting and inclusive destination for all.
Sports and Entertainment Precinct
The Precinct has a history of continual evolution and development. Whether inspired by key events such as the 1956 Olympics and more recent 2002 Commonwealth Games, or in response to the changing needs of the population, new developments continue to be delivered.
Melbourne and Olympic parks have been subject to a $1 billion upgrade(opens in a new window) with new sports and entertainment facilities, access improvements and a new conference venue. The area attracts over 2.5 million visitors annually and hosts international sporting events such as the Australian Open. The nearby Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is also in the early planning stages of a major upgrade and rebuild of the Shane Warne Stand.
Arts Precinct
Melbourne’s vibrant Arts Precinct, host to thousands of international and local theatre, ballet, visual arts and music performances each year, is currently being transformed as part of the largest cultural infrastructure project in Australian history(opens in a new window). Upgrades to the Arts Centre Melbourne, construction of The Fox: NGV Contemporary and the creation of Laak Boorndap, a 18,000 square metre public urban garden, will create over 11,000 jobs during construction.
Transport and connectivity
In addition to this, the Precinct hosts key transport infrastructure and links the south and east of Melbourne with the CBD. The commencement of the Metro Tunnel in 2025 will see the opening of ANZAC and Townhall Stations as well as new pedestrian and cycling links.
