Registration requirements

All teachers seeking employment in Victoria are required to hold a valid registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Returning teachers that do not currently hold VIT registration are encouraged to contact the VIT directly(opens in a new window) to discuss registration requirements and pathways.

Finding jobs through the Applicant Pool

Teachers who hold a valid registration with the VIT and feel classroom ready could consider joining the Applicant Pool. The Applicant Pool is a streamlined and efficient way for you to connect with school recruiters based on your needs and preferences. Once you have set up your Applicant Pool profile, you will match to roles based on your preferences.

For more information, visit the School Jobs Vic(opens in a new window) webpage.

Returning teacher placements

The Teacher Re-Engagement Initiative (TREI) helps returning teachers. It offers a paid volunteer placement for up to 40 days in Victorian government schools. Participating schools can now host a returning teacher for $330 per day. This covers the paid placement and administrative costs. Through mentoring from current staff, participants observe the class and school environment.

Am I eligible?

TREI is for qualified teachers who want to return to the classroom after a long break. If you’ve been away from a fixed-term or ongoing teaching role for 12 months or more, you may be eligible. Participants must have the right registration to work with children.

Re-engage teachers, strengthen your workforce

Schools taking part in TREI have seen clear benefits for their staff and their students. The program helps skilled teachers get back into the classroom.
