Renting in Victoria
More Victorians are renting than ever. For some, this is by choice – they enjoy the flexibility renting affords. Some rent while they save enough for a home deposit. But for others, renting is their only choice.
Pets and renting
Do you want to keep a pet in your rental property?
Support and advice for renters
Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) provides advice to help renters to ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities. Prospective renters, real estate agents or members of the public can now use CAV’s Report an issue with an advertised rental property form.
The Commissioner for Residential Tenancies listens to renters and advocates for improvements in renting rights and practices in Victoria.
Renters who need additional support such as financial help, emergency accommodation or public housing can access programs at Housing Victoria.
Property managers
Consumer Affairs Victoria licences estate agents and monitors compliance with their legal obligations.
Changes to renting laws
Rental law changes came into effect in 2021.
The changes expanded the rights and responsibilities of renters and rental providers. For example, new minimum standards. The changes apply to all tenancy types including private rentals, rooming houses, caravan and residential parks. For more information, visit Consumer Affairs Victoria.
