Preparing for Narrarrang Primary School to open

As we prepare for the opening of the Narrarrang Primary School(opens in a new window) in Port Melbourne in 2026, there will be some changes to the roads around the school to make it safer for families to access the school.

We’re making safety improvements at the intersection of Williamstown Road and Smith Street. The works will include:

These upgrades are funded by the Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal Area Development Contribution Plan(opens in a new window) to help deliver on the vision for the Fishermans Bend Precinct as a thriving place that is a leading example for environmental sustainability, liveability, connectivity, diversity and innovation.

Details about the construction are available on the Transport Victoria website(opens in a new window).

As part of early investigations, we investigated two possible locations to install a pedestrian and bike rider crossing with traffic lights on Williamstown Road. One location to the east of Smith Street, and the other to the west of Smith Street.

Both locations were considered based on safety, accessibility, constructability and impacts on community and existing infrastructure.

Our investigations showed that the location on Williamstown Road east of Smith Street had more impact on community and existing infrastructure than the location to the west of Smith Street.

The location of the new pedestrian and bike rider crossing with traffic lights on Williamstown Road west of Smith Street will improve pedestrian safety at the intersection, while having a lower impact on community and existing infrastructure at the intersection.

The location of the new pedestrian and bike rider crossing with traffic lights will complement future improvements on Smith Street.

We are making other safety improvements to make the intersection of Smith Street and Williamstown Road safer for pedestrians, bike riders and school children.

The raised pedestrian crossing on Smith Street will improve safety by giving pedestrians right of way to cross the road. The raised crossing will also help to slow down motorists turning into Smith Street and remind motorists of the low speed environment.

Planning to improve safety and access on Smith Street is ongoing and more information can be found on Council’s website(opens in a new window).

The right turn lane and centre median on Williamstown Road will be closed to prevent right turns into and out of Smith Street.

By preventing these right turns, we’re making the intersection safer for everyone and lowering the risk of crashes between motorists, bike riders and pedestrians at the intersection.

Motorists will be able to turn left into Smith Street from Williamstown Road and left out of Smith Street onto Williamstown Road.

Detour maps are available on the Transport Victoria website(opens in a new window).
