Next-generation G Class Trams

The Victorian Government is investing $1.85 billion in 100 next-generation G Class trams and the new Maidstone Tram Depot.

The 100 new G Class trams are the largest investment in locally made trams in Australia’s history.

The trams set a new standard for modern public transport and will provide more comfortable, accessible and energy-efficient journeys.

The project has a 65 per cent local content requirement, supporting up to 1900 local jobs.

Tram manufacturer Alstom has been contracted to design, build and maintain the new trams.

Manufacturing is underway at Dandenong in Melbourne’s south-east, with the first test tram delivered to the new Maidstone Tram Depot in September 2025.

After extensive testing is complete, the new G Class trams will progressively begin taking passengers on routes 59, 57, and 82 over coming years, as more new trams are delivered and driver training is completed.

Designed with Melburnians, for Melburnians

Using insights gained from our previous High Capacity Metro Trains and E Class tram projects, the new G Class is based on Alstom’s proven Flexity 2 tram design, customised and refined for Melbourne’s needs.

In an award-winning co-design process, we engaged with hundreds of passengers, accessibility advocates, tram drivers, and technical experts in workshops and hands-on evaluation of a life-size mock-up.

A vision for universal access

The new trams have been designed to improve access for everyone through their low-floor design and the consideration of new technologies.

We took a human-centred approach to enhance the onboard experience and ensure the tram was more accessible and user-friendly.

Accessibility improvements and features were further evaluated and refined through the co-design and consultation program.

Supporting local jobs

At its peak, the project will support up to 1,900 Victorian jobs through direct manufacturing and across Victoria’s strong rolling stock supply chain.

The project requires 65 per cent local content, which is above Victoria’s minimum 50 per cent local content policy for new rolling stock orders.

The new fleet will support future network service changes and other improvements to public transport, including service upgrades, which will also support jobs in tram operations.

Manufacturing

The Victorian Government’s rolling stock program is building a world-class rolling stock industry right here in Victoria.

The G Class trams started being manufactured in 2024 in Dandenong. The first G Class test trams have been delivered and are now being put through their paces in a comprehensive testing program to ensure they are ready for passenger service.

Operations

The new G Class trams will be able to operate across the entire network. Design features like improved energy efficiency, tram length and internal layout will ensure they can run on our existing lines without major changes to tracks or the tram power system.

The new Maidstone Tram Depot has been constructed to maintain and help house the new fleet.

The new fleet will initially operate on routes 57, 59 and 82 from Maidstone and Essendon tram depots.

Planning for wider operation of G Class trams on more routes is underway, in coordination with other initiatives as part of Melbourne’s Tram Plan.

The 7th generation of trams

In keeping with Melbourne tramway practice, these new vehicles will be our network’s 7th generation of trams and have been assigned the letter class ‘G’ – the 7th letter of the alphabet. G Class trams will also receive individual vehicle numbers starting from 7001.

The use of ‘G Class’ for these vehicles continues Melbourne’s proud tram classification tradition while celebrating our next generation of trams.
