Bairnsdale Sports Award Presentation
Spirit of Sport Award winner - Bairnsdale Secondary College:
[Male Student]
Well, it’s the Spirit of Sport Award.
[Grant Sanderson, Sports Coordinator, Bairnsdale Secondary College]
Sport is a big part of our identity here at Bairnsdale Secondary College. In addition to the challenge of the contest, sport builds a sense of connectedness. When you compete together, you grow together.
[Luka, Table tennis player]
I really like the camaraderie in my teammates and yeah, just getting active, take your mind off things.
[Grant Sanderson]
Sport builds skills and friends for life and gives the students the chance to represent their college, their town and East Gippsland.
[Annabelle, Lawn bowls player]
I play lawn bowls. I like the socialising, the concentration that’s needed and how you have to be precise to have a close shot.
[Grant Sanderson]
Win or lose, sport teaches students valuable lessons for life. There is so much more than the final score. There is how you played the game, how you conducted yourself and how you supported your team and treated the opposition.
[Cooper, Soccer player]
It’s not always about winning. If you play well as a team, it shows back to the school that you’re doing well together and it’s not always just about the winning aspect. It’s mainly just playing well together and having fun, I guess.
[Grant Sanderson]
For us, Spirit of Sport stands for great sportsmanship, kindness and understanding of those who compete with and against you. It reflects who we are and what we stand for.
[Annabelle]
One of my highlights has been winning the ‘junior pairs’ with my twin sister, Isabelle. I’ve learnt resilience to losing games or how working together can help you win a game.
[Tony Roberts, Principal, Bairnsdale Secondary College]
We accept this award with a genuine sense of pride and a belief that our community’s deep commitment to having a go is what we aim to exemplify at all levels of competition.
The spirit of sport is more important than the result. It reflects who we are and what we stand for. And we look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for all students to get involved in sporting activities and build the resilience, the pride and skills they need for life beyond school.
