Strengthening number sense at home - Introduction
[On-screen text: Strengthening number sense at home — Introduction] [IMAGE: Victorian Mathematics Ambassadors Emily Glen and Patrick Kennedy stand and face camera]
[Emily Glen] Hi, I’m Emily.
[Patrick Kennedy] And I’m Patrick, and we’re both Victorian Mathematics Ambassadors.
[Emily Glen] No matter which school your child attends or what year level they’re in, mathematics and numeracy are an essential part of their learning.
[Patrick Kennedy] And while Victoria has amazing teachers helping students every day, parents and carers also play a really important role.
[Emily Glen] We know that not everyone feels confident talking about maths at home, and that’s okay. You don’t need to know all the terms or the latest methods.
[Patrick Kennedy] Teachers are here to work with you, and together we can help children see maths as something they use and enjoy every day.
[Emily Glen] In this video, we’ll visit a range of Victorian schools, including government and Catholic schools, to hear from teachers about four key mathematical ideas your child will explore and build on throughout their years at school.
[Patrick Kennedy] We’ll also share some simple practical tips and hints as how you can support your child’s maths learning at home.
[Emily Glen] Because when families and schools work together, every child can grow in confidence and success in mathematics. When talking with your child or their teacher, you may come across some words that weren’t used when you were at school.
However, as you’ve seen in this video, weird or unfamiliar words often have simple meanings. Watching this video is a great start. If it has been helpful to you and you’d like to go deeper, additional resources are available.
There are individual videos for each concept with fact sheets full of ideas about activities to do at home. Having conversations with your child’s teacher is also a great way to feel more confident in supporting your child with their early mathematics learning.
[Patrick Kennedy] Thank you for joining us today. Happy counting.
