2026 VIC Local Hero - Linda Widdup
0:00
Back in 2019, there was some really
0:03
awful stuff going on in New South Wales.
0:06
Donny Doo was in a terrible drought. And
0:08
when you see what the the farmers are
0:11
going through at that time when all is
0:13
lost, they’ve lost cattle, they’ve lost
0:15
everything, it was heartbreaking. And I
0:17
thought to myself, I can’t sit here and
0:20
watch this. You know, my dad sort of
0:22
said, well, what are you going to do?
0:23
And I said, “Well, maybe we put the call
0:25
out for um you know, some volunteers,
0:28
some hay, uh whatever we could get our
0:30
hands on and get it up there to these
0:32
guys.” And a lot of people jumped on
0:35
even with 20 small square bales, a
0:38
truckload of rounds, all that. It all
0:40
made a difference.
0:44
Aussie Hay Runners is there to help
0:47
farmers in time of despair. When there’s
0:50
drought, fire, flood, we’re there to
0:53
help. I put all the runs together. I
0:56
then implement a bit of a plan with all
0:58
the the volunteers of Aussie Hay Runners
1:01
and I then get the boys to pick up the
1:04
hay. I give them their farm drops and
1:07
get it there as quick as we can.
1:10
When Aussie Hay Runners started in 2019,
1:13
there was probably around 20 people. We
1:16
just did our best to to help out where
1:19
we could. We started out with four
1:22
trucks and now we have 74. We’ve covered
1:25
over 6 million km and helped over 5,000
1:28
farmers. We’ve had some absolute
1:30
wonderful people um donate hay, donate
1:34
their time, donate money, and that is
1:37
what’s kept us going. The highlights and
1:40
the rewards of doing what we do is when
1:43
you see someone that has lost absolutely
1:46
everything and you take a load of hay
1:49
down there and they just can’t believe
1:52
that someone would go out of their way
1:55
and take the time of their day to come
1:57
and help them. That load of hay, good
2:00
quality hay coming up their driveway is
2:02
an absolute lifeline. A little bit of
2:06
kindness goes a long way.
