So, I lost my late husband, Greg, to
0:05
brain cancer after a 9-year battle with
0:06
the disease. I was in my early 20s when
0:09
I woke up one night with him having a
0:12
seizure in the bed next to me. And what
0:14
then ensued was 9 years of living hell
0:18
for him. And that decade would
0:20
completely and utterly shape the rest of
0:23
my life. As time goes on, I’m able to
0:27
try and use that pain and turn it into
0:30
something a bit more powerful. And now,
0:33
as I’ve met so many families who’ve been
0:34
through brain cancer, I’ve met so many
0:36
researchers. I’ve met I’ve just met so
0:38
many people. This story is much bigger
0:40
than mine. Now, the brain cancer center
0:44
is trying to do medical research in a
0:47
different way. It’s a collaborative
0:48
space where we encourage all the
0:50
different institutes and hospitals to
0:53
access our funds but talk to each other
0:56
collaboratively and share their wealth
0:59
of information, share their knowledge so
1:01
that we can collectively find a cure.
1:03
We’ve seen it in other cancers where uh
1:05
collaboration begins. That’s where a
1:07
cure is found. It is the most
1:10
mind-blowingly amazing thing to think
1:12
that that’s what’s happening at a center
1:13
as a result of people buying a $29.95
1:17
beanie. Oh, the highlights I’ve had um
1:21
really vary from the monumental moments
1:23
where we raised I think $5 million in
1:27
I think it was 1 hour during our project
1:29
special, but all the way to meeting
1:33
families who’ve lost someone lost a
1:35
child to brain cancer and them looking
1:37
me in the eye and just saying thank you
1:39
like thank you. Somebody’s got to do
1:41
something because no other family can go
1:43
through what we’ve gone through. like
1:44
it’s hell and I understand that and I
1:47
think they’re the moments for me that I
1:48
think about well into the night when I
1:50
can’t sleep and then there’s the other
1:52
moments like walking into a lab and the
1:54
incredible researcher next to me is
1:55
going hey this is incredible what we’ve
1:58
seen through here seeing the excitement
1:59
in their eyes and going that’s happened
2:02
because they’ve been funded for the last
2:03
three years to work on a project through
2:05
our brain cancer center and through
2:06
car’s beanies of brain cancer so there’s
2:08
been some incredible moments in all
2:10
different areas over the last 10 years
2:12
and yeah I’m looking forward to more of
2:14
them. I mean, I’d really
2:18
love to be able to stand up in a few
2:20
years time and look Australians in the
2:23
face and go, “Our country has found a
2:25
cure for brain cancer.
