Male voiceover: The Victorian Government’s Doctors in Secondary Schools program puts adolescent health trained GPS in 100 government secondary schools across the state, based on a successful program operating at Wellington Secondary College.
The initiative will mean young Victorians can access the health and well-being, care and support they need to reach their full potential.

Junior: In 2015, I had an acute rheumatic fever. I come here to see the doctor to get my monthly injections. My mum didn’t like going all the way to Dandenong because we don’t have a car.
[On-screen text: Associate Professor Lena Sanci – University of Melbourne]
Lena Sanci: Young people during adolescence notoriously access healthcare less often than any other age group in Australia.
It makes sense basing healthcare within educational settings. The major health issues for young people in Australia today are particularly in the areas of mental health, substance use, obesity, poor diet and nutrition, and risk factors from violence and abuse.
[On-screen text: Hugh Blaikie – Principal, Wellington Secondary College]
Hugh Blaikie: We have a very successful partnership with McKinley Medical Clinic.
The GPS are fantastic. They’re registrars, they’re young, and they themselves are fantastic role models for our students. Parents in our community work full-time, and that is difficult for them to drop everything and take their child to a medical professional. So, to have the doctor’s service here is a great bonus for them.
We’re absolutely delighted that the government has picked up on this initiative. We’re very honoured that they are using our model to roll out 100 schools across the state.
