Ready to Volunteer - Anthony’s story
0:00
My name is Anthony White.
0:01
I’m a volunteer here at SES.
0:04
I have been the controller here for the last ten years.
0:07
I’m a self-employed
0:09
and currently running a contract with SES with the radio program.
0:13
What made me join the service?
0:15
When we get called out to an actual job.,
0:18
we knock on the door and we say, ‘Hi, I’m Anthony from the State Emergency Service.
0:22
How can I help you?’ And the relief on that person on the other side
0:26
is, thank God somebody is here to help me.
0:30
And that’s what I get out of that, knowing that I’m actually there
0:34
helping that part of that community that’s in need or in trouble.
0:38
So I would say to a volunteer or person that’s wanting to actually join
0:41
as a volunteer, is that what we get out of it
0:45
is a great sense of support for the community, need.
0:49
You get a lot of terrific skills from the trainers here.
0:54
And also you get to meet the same people that want to help the community.
0:58
Something I’m very, very proud of is my three daughters are part of our unit here.
1:03
So it’s really a terrific thing to be able to get out on a job
1:06
when they’re actually out with me.
1:08
My name’s Rachel White.
1:09
I’m 18 years old.
1:11
I’m a full time student, as well as volunteering at the Sunbury SES.
1:15
I’m Sam White, 23 years old, a mom of a
1:19
one and a half year old and a full time business owner.
1:22
SES has taught us team building, confidence,
1:26
communication skills and we now help people on their worst days.
1:31
For anyone thinking about volunteering, I would say just do it.
1:34
Yeah, it’s it’s been life changing for both of us and it could be for you, too.
1:40
I volunteer because I absolutely love
1:42
the feeling of helping someone when in need.
1:46
I volunteer because I love helping my community as well as helping here
1:50
at the SES organise events, because, I just
1:54
love doing it.
