Emotion dismissing vs emotion coaching

[Upbeat music] [On-screen text: Emotion Dismissing vs Emotion Coaching]

[Pen scratches] [On-screen text: Emotion Dismissing]

[Upbeat music, notification beeps]

Dad: Hey, how’s it going there?

Got the big day tomorrow, huh? [couch creaks] You wanna talk about it?

Jessie: No.

Dad: The new school, so great. I loved high school.

Jessie: Good on you. I’m not like you. If you think it’s so great, maybe you should go.

Dad: What, are you kidding?

You’ll love it! It’s so exciting. Don’t be so negative, love. You always like new things once you get over the first day.

Jessie: No, I don’t.

Dad: Hey, it’s everyone’s first day. Stop getting so wound up about it.

Jessie: I’m not wound up. You don’t get it, do you? I’m not going. [thundercloud buzzes] [Dad sighs] [button whirs]

[Pen scratches] [On-screen text: Emotion Coaching]

Dad: Hey, how’s it going there?

[upbeat music] Got the big day tomorrow, huh? [upbeat music continues] You don’t look too excited about going tomorrow.

It’s a big school, a bit intimidating. [upbeat music continues] [Dad sighs] I imagine there’s a few kids feeling pretty nervous about tomorrow.

Jessie: Whatever. [upbeat music continues] Do I have to go?

Dad: That bad, huh? Yeah, I can imagine it’s not easy.

Jessie: I don’t know where to go.

Dad: Where have they told you to go?

Jessie: They gave us a map, but I can’t work it out.

Dad: Do you want a hand?

Jessie: You have to go to the hall.

Dad: Oh, let’s have a look.

Oh yeah, a lot of buildings. I can see how it could be a bit of a worry finding the hall.

Jessie: How many kids go there?

Dad: Oh, it’s a lot. Maybe 2000 I think. Hmm, so different, isn’t it, a big change?

Jessie: Yeah, Jess is freaked too.

She said she’s gonna do home schooling forever.

Dad: Yeah, I can understand her wanting to avoid it. What about you?

Jessie: Nah, I don’t wanna stay home.

Too boring with you guys. The drama group sounds good, but I don’t know about so many people.

Dad: Yeah, well you love drama.

[Daughter grunts] But you dunno about being around so many people. I get that. It’s funny how you can feel super excited but a bit terrified as well.

What do you think would help?

Jessie: Maybe I’ll text Jess to make sure she’s gonna be there and Jaz, she’s been there a bit before visiting our brother. I think she might know where the hall is.

Dad: We can talk more about it after dinner if you want.

Jessie: Okay. [upbeat music] [upbeat music ends]
