Designated areas are declared in Victoria for areas with high levels of alcohol-related harm.

What is a designated area?
Designated areas are:
- areas where alcohol-related violence and antisocial behaviour have occurred around licensed venues
- determined by the Victorian Liquor Commission in consultation with Victoria Police
- usually in entertainment precincts.
Police powers
In a designated area, Victoria Police have the power to ban people from licensed premises and designated areas for up to 72 hours for:
- physical assault
- destroying or damaging property
- not leaving licensed venues when asked.
They can ban them from either:
- all licensed venues in the designated area
- the entire designated area.
Police can also seek a court order to ban repeat offenders from designated areas for up to 12 months.
