Keeping and trading wildlife

Apply for private and commercial wildlife licences, import and export permits and learn about licence requirements.

In Victoria all wildlife is protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. To keep wildlife privately or for a business you must have a licence.

You must also have a permit to control wildlife.

Commercial wildlife licences

Commercial wildlife licences can be issued to a person or to a corporation, company or business entity.

Private wildlife licences

Most wildlife species require you to have a licence from the Conservation Regulator. There are four types of wildlife licences available for people to keep wildlife at home.

Import and export permits for Victorian wildlife

Transporting wildlife in or out of Victoria may require a permit. Restrictions may also apply.

Rehoming Wildlife Authorisation

A Rehoming Wildlife Authorisation enables the authorisation holder to acquire and possess wildlife for the purpose of rehoming it. Only limited people are eligible to apply.
