Learn what it’s like working in a family violence role. Our panel members share their thoughts about starting a career in the family violence sector and how meaningful, challenging and rewarding their roles are.

Are you curious about what it’s like working as part of a team helping to end family violence in Victoria? We’ve held two Family Violence Career Insights events, each featuring a panel answering questions about career paths, roles and opportunities in a growing sector.
Family Violence Career Insights – 11 December 2020
The first Family Violence Career Insights event was held on 11 December 2020 and featured a panel of experts discussing just what it’s like to work in the family violence sector. Claire McEwan hosted the event and posed a range of questions from the audience to the panel members relating to career pathways, their motivations for entering the sector, advice to new entrants, the importance of diversity in the workforce, and what skills and qualities are required.
Panel members included:
- Zoe – refuge support worker
- Michael – policy officer in perpetrator services
- Leah – sexual assault counsellor
- Charmaine – Aboriginal family violence prevention
- Amber – specialist family violence response
Over 200 people with an interest in family violence careers attended the event and their feedback was overwhelmingly positive with comments such as “Truly inspiring” and “Extremely interesting and eye opening”.

Family Violence Career Insights for new entrants – 18 June 2021
The second event was held on 18 June 2021 and was presented for students and graduates studying social work, community services or related degrees. Joining the panel were current and recent graduates as well as the Learning and Development Facilitator for the Rural and Regional Family Violence Social Work Graduate Program.
