Djakitj pathways to aquaculture

Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners Corporation, Loddon Campaspe region Victoria’s aquaculture industry presents employment opportunities for First Nations Peoples and the wider community. However, aquaculture training is limited, particularly for First Peoples-led pathways, restricting skills development in aquaculture and water management sectors.

The Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners Corporation was granted $175,000 in 2024 to deliver a First Nations-led, industry-supported short-course pilot program, showcasing aquaculture career opportunities and pathways, and offering an accessible foundation skills program.

The program will be developed by the Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners Corporation in co-design with registered training organisations (RTOs), Victorian Fisheries Authority, Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and First Nations Peoples (Djaara) leaders, blending First Nations teaching methods with industry best practices.

It will see direct skills development and employment opportunities created, as well as benefit the Victorian aquaculture industry more broadly.
