Better data

We are gathering and incorporating more real-time data than ever before in order to keep our network flowing more smoothly. On our roads, boosting our data and systems will help us better understand congestion and respond to accidents and other unplanned disruptions more quickly. We’ll be able to give drivers better travel information so they can plan ahead or chose a different route.

We’re also installing sensors on dozens of traffic lights across Melbourne. These detect how many people are waiting so cross time can be extended or cut short to match demand, making roads safer for children, elderly people and everyone else who needs to cross.

On our public transport network, gathering real-time data will help restore confidence in the system by helping passengers make better informed decisions about crowding levels, arrival and departure times and planning their journeys accordingly.
