Automatic extension of trade to 1 am

Some liquor licence types can automatically trade until 1 am.

On this page

If your licence was granted before 15 March 2022, you may qualify for an automatic extension of trading hours to 1 am.

The extension only applies:

The extension to 1 am trading applies to all days of the week, including Good Friday and Anzac Day.

Who gets the extension

These are the eligible licence types:

You must not deliver alcohol or allow it to be taken away from your venue after 11 pm.

Check if you need local council permission to trade until 1 am. Your licence conditions do not override local planning requirements.

Areas with set closing times

Your licence conditions may require you to close certain areas of your venue at a set time.

For example, you may be required to close your outdoor courtyard or balcony earlier than your main bar area.

In this case, the hours on your licence apply. This is even if your licence type is eligible for the 1 am extension.

This also applies to any ‘authorised areas’ for on-premises or restaurant and cafe licences.
