Active transport
The Victorian Government is investing in our inner-city cycling network, with 100 kilometres of new and improved cycling routes to help promote safer cycling to and from the CBD and inner-city areas. The project will give Melburnians more choices about how they travel and will help to free up space on our roads and public transport.
In the coming months, we will use new signage, road markings and barriers to create pop-up improvements to cycle lanes, off-road paths and crossing points.
Similar to a boost in cycling infrastructure seen in Paris, London and Sydney, the routes will be a mixture of temporary protected lanes and off-road paths.
Pedestrians will also see some benefits, with improvements to shared user paths and crossing points under investigation as part of this investment.
We’ve seen a significant increase in cycling in some areas across Melbourne. As our city continues its recovery from the pandemic, it’s more important than ever to support safe cycling.
We will continue to work closely with local councils and commuter representatives, to develop and inform the pop-up cycling routes and ensure they best fit the needs of the whole community.
