Improving Victoria’s waste data systems
Reliable and comprehensive data is a key part of Recycling Victoria’s role.
We have developed a centralised data and insights hub that allows government and waste sector decision makers to make informed decisions based on the best available data.
Through improved data collection, analysis and reporting, Recycling Victoria will:
- develop and implement strategies and plans to foster sustainable, resilient and effective markets to support the transition to a circular economy
- ensure that waste and recycling services are reliable, transparent and meet community expectations
- support innovation in waste and recycling services.
Overview
The Recycling Victoria Data Hub is a new central data resource to inform industry, government and the sector about waste and resource recovery in Victoria.
Data is sourced from surveys carried out with local government and reprocessing companies, as well as Australian Bureau of Statistics data, and Australian Government waste and recycling information.
The data will be used to inform plans for recycling and waste infrastructure, as well as to provide information on material production, use, recycling and disposal.
Why do we need the Recycling Victoria Data Hub?
Expanding and improving Victoria’s waste data systems is a key commitment of the Victorian Government’s circular economy plan.
Recycling Victoria will:
- manage and expand Victoria’s waste data systems
- measure against its regulatory purpose
- provide public access to data, insights, and market intelligence.
The new data hub will provide better access to data, analysis and reporting with the aim to:
- strengthen markets to support the transition to a circular economy
- enable waste and recycling services to be reliable, transparent, and meet community expectations
- support innovation in waste and recycling services.
Providing high-quality, reliable data and reporting enables:
- businesses and government better manage waste and make better investment decisions
- the government to track Victoria’s progress towards a circular economy.
In time, Recycling Victoria will be given powers relating to data collection which will deliver more timely and accurate data.
This will enable greater transparency, which is key for market stability. Increased market stability will bring opportunities for new businesses and growth within existing businesses and the industry.
What are the next steps?
Subject to the introduction of regulations for mandatory data provision, an expanded system will be improved to provide:
- designated areas on the data hub for state and local government, and industry
- mandated data provision
- automated industry and council reporting
- monthly material flow reporting
- integrated market, investment and Recycling Victoria performance reporting
- live waste flow models and capacity models.
