What information is available
Each school in the directory contains the following information:
- school name
- time period in which the school opened
- school type
- school number
- school status.
Listings for some, not all schools, may contain information including:
- other names the school used
- open date
- close date
- further details specifically about that school.
All currently open schools also include the following contact details:
- address
- phone number.
Where does the information come from?
The school directory information is based on:
- data extracted from a list of schools held by the Department of Education, and
- the 1972 3-volume publication Vision and Realisation: A centenary history of state education in Victoria.
Extra details appear on some of the oldest schools
In 2022, to celebrate 150 years of public education in Victoria, over 400 of the oldest schools in Victoria were researched and historical profile pages were created. These profiles include timelines and photos, including links to where the images and other records can be found. This research has been preserved and included in the school directory.
Hint: You can recognise these 400+ schools as their Page titles include the school number in brackets.
For example, Aintree Primary School - Number 5575 is a standard directory listing page, and Addington Primary School (No. 226) was created for the 150-year celebration and includes more details.
